This past spring, Sustainable World Coalition co-produced the 2nd annual Spring of Sustainability (SoS), the largest virtual sustainability gathering ever. SoS brought the “best and brightest” leaders in sustainability to the world through teleconference dialogues.
Each week, in our Best of SoS feature, we review one of our favorite episodes. Like what you see? Head over to our upgrade page for a special offer to own the entire Spring of Sustainability series.
We can do a lot of things as individuals, but what we’ve come to realize is that changing systems is most important and we can only do that when we work together. – Bill McKibben
Spring of Sustainability launched on April 2nd with a powerful and sobering session with Bill McKibben, global climate change activist and founder of 350.org. Bill pointed out that 2 degrees centigrade of warming is the maximum that the Earth can tolerate without going over the edge into climate chaos, causing unimaginable disaster and suffering. We’re already at about 1 degree of warming.
He further made clear that the fossil fuel industry collectively has in its known reserves over 5 times the amount of carbon that it would take to hit that 2 degree limit, so the gun to our head is already loaded.
This is why 350.org is now focused on forcing the fossil fuel industry – oil and coal, most importantly – to shift to renewable energy development through a global campaign of divestment, starting with colleges across the US. And they’re getting traction: hundreds of colleges and universities are joining in.
